Sitting cheek-by-jowl with Giovanni Rosso’s plot of Vigna Rionda, Figli Luigi Oddero’s slice of Serralunga’s greatest vineyard is always destined for greatness. In the hands of Francesco Versio (formerly of Bruno Giacosa), this is a very impressive wine. The 2020 is brilliantly expressive and endlessly complex, moving between red and black cherry, soft cassis and sweet botanical notes. As always, the wine spends three years in large 30hl French oak before a further two+ year rest in bottle at the estate before release. The tannins feel immaculately stitched into the texture of the wine, with the perfume turned up slightly higher than usual, thanks to the vintage. It’s really special.Berry Bros. & Rudd
