At our recent tasting, the Viña Arana was described in the past as suffering from ‘middle child syndrome’. It has frequently gone overlooked in favour of the two famed La Rioja Alta Gran Reservas of 890 and 904. Although, as we discovered, the 2017 Arana is the perfect bridge wine between the Ardanza and other two Gran Reservas. With 6 years of ageing split between barrel and bottle, the wine is allowed to develop complexity and elegance without being overly oaked. There is great tertiary fruit with a freshness that I haven’t witnessed in previous iterations. All in all, the 2017 Arana is a perfect demonstration of the skilled craft that we come to expect from La Rioja Alta.Markus Ljunghammar, Account Manager, Berry Bros. & Rudd (September 2025)
